The Therapy Space Guide to Zoom
Zoom offers an online video service for your counselling sessions, which is an ideal way to take part in therapy during the Covid-19 pandemic or if you struggle with child care, cannot get access to transport, or you have additional needs which can prevent you from getting from A to B easily. Zoom has end to end encryption, and this is important in terms of helping to protect your privacy and confidentiality.
To access this service, you will need a device such as a personal computer, Mac, tablet or mobile telephone which has a camera, audio and broadband, you can also access it via 4G.
This guide will take you through setting up your Zoom account and attending your online session.
Step 1: Setting up your Zoom account
There is a free account option or a paid option
The free account is all that is needed for a counselling session
Sign up to https://zoom.us/signup
Select a secure password.
You can use Google or Facebook, however, for privacy, you run the risk of this being unsecured and The Therapy Space cannot guarantee confidentiality.
Once you’re signed up, download Zoom from https://zoom.us/ onto your device.
Alternatively, you can download the app from the of Google Play or the Apple App Store.
Step 2: Attending your session
Once you have signed up and downloaded – attending your session is very easy:
Each time you make an appointment a link will be sent to you via email, text or Whats App, depending on your preference.
The link will say, 'The Therapy Space is inviting you to a Zoom meeting’
On the Zoom invite there will be a blue link to: ‘Join Zoom Meeting’.
Please save the invite ready for your session.
A few minutes prior to your appointment, click the blue link inviting you to join.
Follow the on-screen instructions, you may need to sign into your Zoom account, so have your password ready.
The message, ‘Waiting Room’, will appear and The Therapy Space will ‘admit’ you at the time of your appointment.
Check your microphone and video symbols are showing as the picture example above.
If the video and microphone is turned off, the display will show a red line through the icons.
Click on the icons once to enable the microphone and video.
